Blackjack: rules, basic strategy chart and free play

Blackjack (also called 21) is a card game against the dealer: you win if your hand is closer to 21 than the dealer's without going over. Aces count as 1 or 11, face cards as 10 and other cards at their number. With basic strategy — a set of mathematically correct decisions for every situation — the house edge falls to around 0.5%, one of the lowest in the casino. Below are the rules, a strategy cheat sheet and the main rule variations that change your odds.

A hand with an ace counted as 11 is soft (for example, ace + 6 = soft 17). If the next card would take you over 21, the ace automatically counts as 1. A blackjack is an ace plus a 10-value card as your first two cards, and it beats any other 21.

How to play blackjack step by step

  1. Place your bet before the cards are dealt.
  2. You get two cards face up; the dealer gets one face up and one face down (or receives the second card later).
  3. Choose an action: hit, stand, double, split or, where offered, surrender.
  4. If you go over 21 you bust and lose immediately, even if the dealer busts later.
  5. The dealer reveals the hole card and must draw until reaching at least 17.
  6. The higher hand wins; equal totals are a push and your bet is returned.

Full strategy charts are more detailed and depend on the exact rules, but even this table cuts the house edge dramatically compared with playing by feel.

Rule variations that change the odds

Blackjack pays 3:2standard, good
Blackjack pays 6:5worse — adds about 1.4% to the house edge

Always check the payout for blackjack: avoid 6:5 tables when a 3:2 table is available.

Card counting

Card counting tracks the ratio of high to low cards left in the shoe. The best-known system is Hi-Lo: +1 for 2–6, 0 for 7–9, −1 for 10s and aces. A high positive count favours the player. In online RNG blackjack the deck is shuffled every hand, so counting does not work there; in live blackjack the shoe is usually cut deep enough to make counting of little use.

Free blackjack and trainers

Many RNG blackjack games at Mostbet have a demo mode — free blackjack with virtual chips, ideal for practising basic strategy. A blackjack trainer or simulator is the fastest way to learn the cheat sheet until the decisions become automatic. Demo winnings cannot be withdrawn.

Live blackjack

In live blackjack a real dealer deals from a physical shoe in a studio. Tables have up to seven seats; some variants let unlimited players use the same cards. Check the table rules (3:2 payout, soft 17, doubling) before you sit down.

Blackjack at Mostbet

Blackjack is in the Casino (RNG) and Live casino sections. New players can use the promo code NEW3000; table games usually count less toward bonus wagering than slots. Other card games: baccarat and poker.

Even with perfect strategy, blackjack has a house edge. Set a budget and stick to it.
